The Global mobile phone market continues to be robust in the face of continued fears about the US economy and the ongoing debt crisis in the Eurozone.  Stable food and fuel inflation in the developing economies so far this year has provided the platform for the continued expansion of the Telecoms market.

We estimate that 404.8 million devices were shipped in Q1 2013, a +3% increase on the corresponding quarter last year. 202.6 million Smartphones were shipped in Q1 2013, a 37% increase on Q1 2012.  But The total feature phone market continues its’ inevitable decline and was outsold in volume terms by Smartphones during Q1 for the first time. Meanwhile, All of the year on year volume growth in Q1 2013 has come from the Asian markets.  

Samsung continue to go from strength to strength and shows no signs of slowing down.  They shipped 109 million devices in the quarter to take a 27% volume share of the Global market, a new high for the Korean giant. 
The “Others” is the real climber in terms of vendor market share.  Collectively, the “Other” vendors, most notably the smaller vendors from China, India and other Asian markets, shipped over 100 million units during the quarter to take 26% volume share of the market.
