Internet connectivity is emerging as one of the fundamental pillars of societal well-being. As part of the sustainable development goals, the United Nations aims, “to significantly increase access to information and communications technology”, and will strive, “to provide universal and affordable access to the Internet in the least developed countries by 2020”. However, 34% of the global population are not yet subscribed to mobile services and close to 57% do not use mobile internet services.
To address the digital divide, industry stakeholders have developed a new category of device, “smart feature phones” that are powered by optimized software platforms that support internet applications and internet services within a feature phone form-factor. It is helping millions of basic feature phone users, who were unable to migrate to smartphones, to adopt a smart feature phone that addresses their needs in an affordable way while also introducing them to the growing digital ecosystem.
In this whitepaper, we first analyze the feature phone segment and second assess how significant the near-to-midterm opportunity is for the mobile industry. We further highlight how some stakeholders are building solutions which will drive new business models and value creation opportunities for all.
