India Quarterly Handset Outlook Jan 2020
Counterpoint Research remains bullish about the market and believes that it will outpace GDP growth significantly in the medium-term. We expect that by 2022 over 700 million people will have a smartphone, and over a billion devices will be sold over the next 4-5 years. Therefore, smartphone sales alone may not be indicative of the health of the economy, until penetration increases. 2020 is going to be a key year for major incumbent brands such as Samsung which is likely to grow due to the change in their product strategy. Chinese players like Xiaomi, realme, vivo and OPPO will also grow. The local brands are facing competition from the emergence of these Chinese brands as some of them like Tecno and iTel are competing in similar price segments.
