"Electric vehicles (EVs) will overwhelmingly drive the global auto industry growth over the next decade, reaching up to 30 million units by 2030. China is already dominating the emerging EV market with 40% of global production. The US currently produces only 20% of the world’s EVs. Further, the US market and production are not growing as quickly as China. The writer of this article suggests that the US Congress should be far more ambitious and provide consumer tax credits to encourage the sale of more affordable EVs in large numbers. The writer also suggests that the US Congress should also require all new federal government vehicles to be US-made EVs. Finally, the writer says the US must begin to produce more of the minerals that are crucial to EVs. It seems true that the US is recently losing the race on clean energy innovation, despite former President Barack Obama’s efforts to boost competitiveness in the sector. If the US really do not want to get left behind, it would better hurry up and look for creative strategies across the supply chain such as finding ways to efficiently develop a domestic supply of critical minerals for EVs." - Liz Lee (Source: Forbes)

"With vehicle software generating annual revenues of US$280 billion a year currently, going up to US$1.2 trillion by 2030 sounds like a reasonable projection. The lack of software development skills at traditional OEMs and its suppliers makes technology companies outside the automotive industry well placed to realize the opportunity. Although, this would mean having to drop conventional mindsets that have long dominated automakers and suppliers." - Vinay Piparsania (Source: Reuters)

"Toyota Motor Corp plans to offer royalty-free access to its hybrid-vehicle technology patents within this year. With Toyota holding almost 20,000 active patents in the field, accessibility to hybrid technology on motors, power converters, and batteries would be openly available. This apparent disclosure is possibly motivated by the protective need to encourage and broad base hybrid strategies in the industry rather than jump straight to pure electric vehicles. With the lowered development costs and potential scale, we can expect prices for light and heavy hybrids to be accessible. It is also possible that policymakers consider incentives as an interim measure towards the adoption of hybrid vehicles for meeting emission targets. No doubt, a move inspired by Elon Musk's earlier announcements, offering free access to Tesla's EV technology." - Vinay Piparsania (Source: Nikkei Asian Review)

"GM, Ford and Toyota have come together with SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers) to establish “safety guiding principles to help inform standards development.” The group will be established as an Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium. The aim of the group is to help regulators and companies frame adequate protocols to enable and expedite the availability of autonomous cars on the road. Technology companies and startups are moving ahead of traditional car companies to create Level 4 autonomous vehicles. This consortium is an attempt by traditional players to create a lobby for influencing regulators and create rules in their favor. I suspect that more traditional car companies will be joining hands with this consortium." - Shobhit Srivastava (Source: Reuters)

"Wayve claims to be approaching the autonomous driving problem from a different angle than other autonomous driving (AD) companies. Wayve wants to do away with expensive sensor arrays, 3D maps, and massive computing power. It is instead relying on relatively simple computer vision and deep learning models. I can't help feeling that Waymo et al., must also have considered this as an approach, even if only as a tangential line of thinking. The problem with AD is the environments in which cars have to operate contains an almost infinite number of variables - even if the basic pattern of driving is fairly straightforward. It's the variables that make it hugely complex for machines to drive safely. If Wayve can make it work, however, it would dramatically reduce the costs and development time for making autonomous driving a reality." - Peter Richardson (Source: Slash Gear)

"Claro Brazil announced that it will roll out eSIM support for smartphones and smartwatches from March 29th. It is the first carrier in Brazil and LATAM to kick off this service. Vivo (Telefonica Brazil) also announced, in the same week, that it will support eSIM, but only for smartwatches. iPhone XS and iPhone XR have both been launched in Brazil in November 2018. However, their eSIM versions were not working until now. Chile will be the second country to launch eSIM services. Movistar Chile announced at MWC 2019 that it would launch eSIM services in March. On March 29th, it announced that eSIM is available in only one carrier store. So far, no other carrier in LATAM has announced a clear plan for eSIMs. However, Mexico could soon launch eSIMs as it is a leading market for iPhones in LATAM." - Tina Lu (Source: Canal Tech)

"Around MWC, we saw a number of 5G smartphones unveil. The first wave of 5G smartphones are finally going to be sold later this week in South Korea from Samsung and LG. Both the devices will cost north of US$1,000. This is because the cost deltas for adding 5G connectivity and IP royalties between 4G to 5G phones are estimated to be in the range of US$80-US$120. Added to this are marketing costs. Depending upon the regions (testing, certifications, duties) and variants (mmWave or sub-6GHz or both), we will see such cost deltas appearing in the first wave of devices. Further, with subsidies almost non-existent in 5G versus 4G era, it remains to be seen how is the uptake for these new devices initially. Marketing push and attractive 5G data plans pricing from carriers will be key for 5G smartphones to reach tens of millions of shipments this year." - Neil Shah (Source: Samsung Newroom)

"NVIDIA said that it will acquire Mellanox for US$6.9 Billion to boost its data center business. Mellanox has a market capitalization of around US$6 Billion and is the dominant supplier of InfiniBand technology, a networking standard commonly used in supercomputers. NVIDIA is witnessing a decline in the gaming GPU business in recent quarters. The advent of cloud gaming means that the decline will continue. Therefore, NVIDIA is boosting its data center business to offset the shrinking gaming business. Data center revenues are 25% of NVIDIA’s total revenues. It wants to increase this share." - Prachir Singh (Source: NVIDIA News)

"ON Semiconductor announced the acquisition of California-based semiconductor firm, Quantenna Communications. Quantenna sells WiFi chips and software used in routers and other electronic devices. The acquisition will help expand ON Semiconductors's chip portfolio, which currently consists of wireless RF transceivers supporting protocols such as Bluetooth, Sigfox, ZigBee, Thread, 6LoWPAN and others. The company wants to strengthen its portfolio in automotive and industrial market segments for low-power connectivity solutions." - Hanish Bhatia (Source: Fierce Wireless)

"China's mobile payment transactions have hit a record US$41.5 trillion, a 14x increase in the past five years. Many users have adopted digital payments as their primary financial tool, skipping plastic/paper money altogether. This is similar to the adoption of mobile phones as a primary medium for internet consumption, skipping PC's and desktops. Alipay and WeChat dominate the space with both capturing 90% of the expenditure." - Tarun Pathak (Source: Tech in Asia)
